Making Tax Digital is part of HMRC’s move towards digital tax records and digital submissions. VAT-registered businesses are already required to keep digital records and submit VAT returns using compatible software. Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is also being introduced in stages for many sole traders and landlords.

What will taxpayers need to do?
Businesses and landlords within the scope of Making Tax Digital for Income Tax will generally be required to:
- Keep digital accounting records
- Use compatible software
- Submit quarterly updates to HMRC
- Complete an end-of-year finalisation process
- Maintain records in accordance with HMRC’s digital requirements
These obligations apply once the relevant qualifying income threshold is met.
